Well, it depends on where you’re from.
In America, a third of a cup would be 7 tablespoons. But in Asia and Australia, that measurement is only 4 tablespoons.
Most Asian countries use the metric system while American cups are measured in Imperial units meaning 1/3 of an American rounded up or shorted down cup is about 3 tablespoons which is equivalent to 12 teaspoons versus 18 for Americans.
The Australian measurement of the tablespoon and teaspoon differs from the other two countries because they use the metric system too but their butter also comes in 100g packs which we have never seen here in America because all our butter comes in sticks and half sticks at 2 tablespoons that equals one stick at 1 tablespoon!
It depends on the size of the tablespoon. If we use a regular-sized table spoon, there are 3 tsp in a 1/3 cup, but if we use an 8 to 12-inch long cooking spoon, you would need to know how many teaspoons that equates too. Beware though – traditional tablespoons have not been standardized to 3 teaspoons and differ based on country like the UK’s tablespoon being 20 ml while our tablespoon is 25ml so both is going to be different ratios.
So if someone asked me for a third of a teaspoon I would give them one fifth or one sixth depending on where I am from as well as whether we’re talking about this type of measuring spoon or some other type of metric scale.
It is possible to measure a third of a cup in tablespoons, but not in teaspoons or milliliters. For example, there are 6 teaspoons and 10 tablespoons in half a cup when measured by volume.
