What is Shounen anime?
Shounen makes up the boy-oriented side of Japanese animation and it’s generally aimed at early teens. Shounen anime usually contains character themes such as friendship, teamwork, working towards a goal, courage/bravery, conviction to do what is right or prudent; and sometimes even resolve in the face of conflict with enemies.
There are many shounen anime movies that would be good for family viewing – Nausicaa Valley of the Wind;The Tale of Princess Kaguya ; Tales from Earthsea ; Spirited Away . These movies offer an ideal mix between light heartedness and serious moral conflicts.
Shōnen manga is comic book, generally used as a synonym for manga aimed at older children and early adolescents, although the scope japanese can be subjective. The term shōnen means “young boy” while the kanji 少年 literally means “few years”.
The plot tends to focus more on action than sexual themes or romance, but many series do include shōjo elements in some of their major plots.
