Shounen (boys’) anime is an animation genre aimed at boys and typically marketed in Japan. Outside Japan it has been associated most closely with coming-of-age stories. Shakugaare is the Japanese abbreviated name for shounen manga, anime, doramas and video games that are developed for male audiences ages 10 to 18. The term “shonen” creates confusion between adult manga or dramas which are recommended for a more mature audience because currently there is no equivalent term used in English-speaking countries outside of North America where those items contain a warning label about their explicit content such as TV-MA or 18+ years old.
