Akame Ga Kill anime vs manga – What are the differences?
Akame ga Kill! first began with a shonen manga series, written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. The story follows Akame, a woman who was raised as an assassin for the Empire, and has been ordered to kill her former master and lover; however she finds herself among several other killers in the same predicament. There are also frequent references to Chinese customs.
The anime is very faithful to the source material with only some changes made due to content not being suited for children’s television airing hours or within broadcast regulations.
The manga and the anime have slight differences that are apparent. In the anime, Akame ga KILL! is set in a fictional country named Touka with the characters referred to as TOUSENs (they’re people who possess superpowers known as EsIDes). Also, in this version, Akame tries to save her sister from being sent into prostitution but ends up killing both of them by accident when they were attacked by a TOUSEN wielding a dragon blade.
In contrast, in the manga series “Akatsuki no Yona” (English translation is “Akatsuki’s Princess”), it follows the journey of Yona who witnesses an uprising of King Kilos with her best friend Kuran showing up to explain what’s happening
As someone who has both watched the anime and read the manga of Akame Ga Kill, I can say that while the overall storyline remains the same, the manga delves deeper into character backgrounds and provides more detailed explanations for certain events, making it a worthwhile read for fans of the series.
The manga is better because it has a more detailed storyline.
In the anime, there were many details that were overlooked. For example, Izumi’s night journey is mentioned in passing but never expanded on for the viewer to understand why she feels so resolved in her decision to have Akame kill her. There are also noticeable changes in the animation and character designs which detracts from enjoying it as an anime fan. Some may disagree with me and say these flaws concern minor issues or that they don’t change much of what happens but I feel like at least some parts should be consistent between formats to keep people engaged throughout the story line, even if their preferences differ somewhere else.

Akame ga Kill is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Takahiro. The series has been collected into ten volumes as of December 2012, and an English translation was released in North America from Chuang Yi (formerly Speedy Manga) on March 2nd 2015. An anime adaptation premiered during Tokyo’s TV Asahi’s noitamina block on July 6th 2014 which covered the first four volumes of the overall story line.
I personally found that the anime adaptation of Akame Ga Kill had a faster pace compared to the manga, with some key events and character developments skipped or altered. If you’re a fan of the series, I recommend checking out both versions for a more comprehensive understanding of the story.
