There are six Avengers.
Iron Man (Tony Stark), Hawkeye, Black Widow, The Hulk (Bruce Banner), Thor and Captain America (Steve Rogers) constitute the Avengers. The Maximoffs including Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver were members for a time before splitting off into their own group called S.H.I.E.L.D.. Ultron was also once an Avenger but subsequently turned against them in many battles over the years as well as one of their greatest antagonists but he is no longer allied with either side and now pursues his own goals, though primarily attacking Earth’s defenses against him like HYDRA whom he has been funding from secret since he came to Earth.
There were originally six members of the Avengers before their battle with Ultron, and they were Hulk (Bruce Banner), Black Widow (Natasha Romanova), Hawkeye (Clint Barton), Iron Man/Tony Stark, Captain America/Steve Rogers and Thor.
However, since then the numbers have fluctuated so much that it’s safest to say *at least* six. Of course there are always at least five current team members in existence because of Iron Man. But for a moment let’s just imagine a scenario in which Tony is headlining The Infinity Wars with Spider-Man as his only “Avenger” ally; that would make Spidey an Avenger by default and give the team identity a grand total of one member.
So, if that’s the case then let’s just review the original roster again. Remember, they were all heroes before they met each other to form The Avengers, so their membership stands on its own merit even though none of them are still alive anymore… except Iron Man.
There are six Avengers: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye.
The Avengers is a team composed of superheroes who have joined forces to defend the Earth against various threats. Except for Captain America all the other members gained their powers from radiation exposure.
Each Avenger has been assigned a number between one and six corresponding with his/her initial in the team line up which follows alphabetically as well as by order of power quotient: Loki (6), Hawkeye (5), Quicksilver (4), Scarlet Witch (3), Black Widow (2) and Hulk (1). Iron Man’s name does not correspond to any number because he was not around when assigning numbers were made.
Sixteen.
There are sixteen official avengers, although many of them have died at some point in the comics or movies. Continuity is a hard thing to manage, and anything labeled as canon is up for debate. In order to include more avengers that could possibly show up on screen someday, it’s necessary to go back about ten years when Marvel had the rights they needed (at least until Spider-Man was brought back over). These days? Who knows! The list is likely quite short at this point though…
Seven.
Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor, Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff), Hulk (Bruce Banner), Captain America, Hawkeye, and the new guy Ant-Man are all considered Avengers. They also have other teammates and allies who aren’t members of the “Avenger Initiative” but still show up to save the day from time to time. For example, Spiderman was a superhero before he joined the team and is a public icon for superheroes everywhere. Other non-Avengers would include Falcon or even Ironman’s father Howard Stark who designed his suit way back in 1962. Honeypot also helps out on occasion as an agent despite not actually being exactly an Avenger herself either.

In the actives roster there are: Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch. Ant-Man is currently on his honeymoon with wife Wasp and it’s unclear if he will join the team again. The number of Avengers can change depending on present and past incidences.
The roster changes anytime there’s a major event that eliminates an Avenger or recruits a new one to fill in for a previous member. There are times when someone new becomes an “Avenger” who never becomes active but has been added to this list as well so we know they exist in the Universe if they should decide to come back and start fighting crime again.
There are an estimated 22 avengers that have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of these heroes may not be seen for months, or perhaps we’ll never see them again! The original Avengers of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk (Bruce Banner), Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff), Hawkeye (Clinton Barton), and the Wasp (Janet Van Dyne). We now know there are many more to come! Age isn’t slowing down these superheroes anytime soon.”
There are seven Avengers- Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, The Vision and The Wasp.
Seven Avengers has been the core team since the 2012 Marvel theatrical release “The Avengers”. Prior to this event Iron Man was partnered with other superheroes who were in their own films (such as Captain America).
Shortly after that movie reformed into five individuals and other heroes got their own movies like Ant-Man.
In 2017 Spider-Man is joining what will once again be a complete of seven characters in the ranks of The Avengers.
I think there are 18 Avengers.
After the events of Secret Wars, Kang outwits the Time-Keepers and destroys a planet (killing several thousand innocents) while on trial by combat against Thor. For this act, he is considered one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes because of his willingness to kill.
As an Avenger, he joins up with various other members over time and tries to destroy Thanos and take over the galaxy in order to create a timeline where there were many more heroes for what was meant to be our salvation from some unknown force trillions of years ago during one cataclysmic event. It remains unclear whether these “early” heroes actually existed or if they were created as part of Kang’s plans; but he leaves Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at one point.
After this, he begins his own Avengers team consisting of himself, Thor (now known as Ragnarok), Hulk (who has been separated from Banner for some time now), She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) and Agatha Harkness.
Eventually, the Grandmaster forms a version of the Avengers, consisting of his brother Enrakt, Beta Ray Bill, Silver Surfer, Gladiator and a mystery member.
