As a player, I’ve found that Toll the Dead is a versatile cantrip in 5e that deals more damage to targets missing hit points, making it a reliable choice for attacking enemies in combat situations.
As a warlock spell, Toll the Dead allows you to bind a soul to your service. You can then use it to release life-draining energies against your opponents in the form of necrotic damage and use its keen senses to find foes who are hiding or invisible nearby.
Toll the Dead is an evocation ritual that summons spirits from another world in order to dispatch enemies with powerful curses from beyond the veil. It originally appeared as part of UA09: Necromancicon, but has been updated for 5e as part of the Princes of Darkness Supplement for Wizards’ RPG team Northrunes Press(es). For rules purposes, Treat this hex like Death Knell except that it only deals 1 Negative Level.
Tolling the dead is a necromantic ritual that was developed centuries ago by wizards to ensure their survival during great battles or other deadly events. The wizard casts this spell on himself, strokes his face with one hand, and then holds his arms out wide (as if carrying a large object in front of him).
The ritual transforms the caster’s own life energy into an astral body made from pure force. This constructs provides protection against various attacks and wounds through force field effects surrounding it. The construct only lasts as long as it takes for the caster to release his planned devastation; after which, he dies without returning to his physical body unless he has some form of magic that operates beyond death (such as a soul binding effect).
It’s a cleric spell that deals necrotic damage to other creatures at a higher ratio than your own health, and it restores some of the life is lost to the caster.
This means that if someone with 100HP casts this spell, it will deal 100 times 3 = 300 points of necrotic damage to opponents and restore 20HP, while taking away an equal amount from himself. This gives the character diminishing returns even as he gains more health again in successive steps. The primary goal is therefore not using this early on (because you’re spending something valuable just to heal yourself). It should only be used when your HP are near-zero (in order for it to give you back any real value).
It figuratively refers to summoning the spirits of your ancestors and asking them for advice or knowledge.
It can also refer to holding a seance where a worshiper asks his ancestors, other dead humans, or some other entity such as gods, demons, angels, or powerful beings from living religions (e.g. Jesus) for help or guidance in the service of their goals. Anyone who accepts the summons dies and is unable to be resurrected – including taking on feats that are typically reserved only for ghosts (usually because they’re already undead). This is due to all necromancers being seen both as equals in rank within the feywilds *and* as allies thereof meaning that any summoned creature is infact teleported away.
Toll the dead 5e allows you to impersonate a recently dead creature. The spell is designed to be used as an ersatz type of resurrection, in order to get close enough for desperate combat with a more formidable enemy.

Some very daring or selfless types will cast this spell on themselves and then tear into enemies in order to disrupt them and buy their allies time before succumbing- after all, any bits that escape will remain zombified until they are destroyed by their former friends or reduced from intelligent beings back into mindless undead automatons. Similarly, one might think it acceptable to use toll the dead against creatures that frequently revive themselves from defeat.
The toll the dead spell can bring back any humanoid creature, so long as the person has a strong desire to be raised up from the dead.
In DnD 5e its primary power is that it allows you to cast it multiple times per day if you want. For example, if your fighter falls in battle and your cleric has already used their healing powers on them, all they need to do is cast this spell and the fighter will stand right back up with 20 hp as if nothing happened! It’s also useful in campaigns where tons of PCs die each adventure due for a variety of reasons (high hit points mean adventurers don’t always live). It’s one of those cool spells DMs hand out liberally.
As an action you may present your holy symbol, and create a quick melody which wards off other creatures of the night. You may toll the dead once per short or long rest.
Creatures of the night are frightened away as if being subjected to the effect of a Turn Undead spell cast by a Cleric (turning level = your WIS modifier). When you toll undead, any beast who can hear your signature tune falls under its effects. This includes beasts that are normally immune to Turn Undead. For example, humans and vampires would be affected by this ability, even though they typically aren’t in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition rules.
Individuals who have been brought back from death or Valhalla (for example) are unaffected.
