Coat typically refers to the length and the function of the garment. A jacket is shorter, but can still be long enough to cover your bottom.
Pants are not a requirement for jackets that cover your bottom!
Coat is usually an outer garment with sleeves made from wool, leather or heavy cloth material (e.g., fur) used as protection against rain or wind. Jackets are often worn in conjunction with trousers such as jeans, khakis or dress slacks. So you can wear a coat without pants because it’s functionally an overgarment whereas a jacket would need pants underneath so it wouldn’t drag on the ground when worn (unless it was really short).
Coat – is heavy and can be worn outside for winter weather. Jacket- lighter, often a warmer material this would be worn as an inside layer during the winter months. It also offers less protection than other options because it does not have to withstand wetness, wind, or cold temperature impacts like snow and rain.
Jacket–is what you wear when you want to look more chic than someone who wears a coat. A coat–is what you wear if you want your outfit to say “I’m formal.” Your attire when wearing a coat will usually mean that there’ll be no wrinkles on your suit jacket that would reflect as casualness towards the onlooker (either through your dress or lack of).
Sometimes the difference is outside vs. inside, sometimes it’s length to fit more or less snug. A coat a looser than a jacket, for example.
A distinction could also be made between the two based on weight – where a jacket tends to be lighter than a coat in wintertime and thicker when there’s more warmth needed.
Another distinction could be made between them based at different geographic locations; referring to the type of fabric used (coats tend to be heavier and warmer).
If none of these are plausible distinctions, then most likely they refer to something completely different and should not be compared against one another.
Jackets are thinner and often informal, but coats are typically more worn as outerwear. A coat can also refer to something that provides warmth during cold weather.
A jacket is a lighter garment worn on top of one’s other clothing during the winter. A coat, on the other hand, is a heavier outer garment that covers one’s entire body. Like with most articles of clothing, there are different types of jackets and coats available in different shapes and lengths .
A jacket is usually lighter, shorter, and designed for warmer weather. Gloves usually go with jackets. A coat is longer, heavier, and designed for colder weather. Mittens or gloves can go with coats.
A coat is a type of outer garment that refers to a heavy winter item which keeps the cold out by blocking the wind and closes up at front buttoned or zipped not like coat which means it’s not closed at the front. Unlike jackets which are light clothes worn especially in summer that also close up at front but open sometimes from bottom side open unlike leather shoes and boots wich lead to chilly feet! One more difference between these two items of clothing is length both have different lengths of cloth long on one side and short on the other side of cloth neither can be compared with eachother. Jacket is a closefitting garment worn on upper body and made from thin fabric, without sleeves and it mostly has front opening that closes with buttons or zips, however coats are usually large and long and most of them have sleeves too!
So jackets are day clothes while coat can be used for daily use and mostly night wear jacket is less comfortable than coat because it has no sleeves and is not as long as coats!

A jacket is always a shorter length, while coats are usually longer than a jacket.
The difference lays in the design and range. Coats are designed to be worn outside, often as protection from rain or snow, while jackets can be worn with little regard for the elements. For example, one might expect to see people wearing knee-length jackets at a party during winter but an evening coat overtop of formal dress in winter time is more likely to protect from rain or snow.
There’s no difference in function, but a jacket is typically considered fashionable while a coat may be more utilitarian and less in fashion.
A coat is typically gendered male and worn as an outer garment. It differs from a jacket because of the length of the sleeves and its general bulkiness. A winter – or cold-weather – jacket would normally have shorter sleeves than its spring/autumn counterpart due to it’s lighter weight and lack of lining on the inside. The two items can overlap, but not always; for example, there are some long jackets that could be mistaken for coats if they were lined on the inside. Sometimes people also refer to what we call “jumper” as a “jacket”. The choice of the word depends on where you are in the world, or who’s speaking to you.
If it’s a piece of outerwear, it’s probably a coat. If it has sleeves that end somewhere around your wrists over top of lighter parts of clothing (usually something like a T -shirt), then it is probably a jacket. Usually coats are bulkier, hence the “coat” part. Jackets are usually made of more thin material but can also be made thick.
