Why are the British confused about us calling bread rolls “biscuits” when they call bread rolls “puddings”?

(Why I darest say, they darest not get offended when they so indeed have examples that violate their own use and nomenclature!) IE: pudding as a specific dessert, puddings as a general term for desserts. Calling something a Yorkshire pudding that is not a pudding and not a dessert.

As an American who lived in the UK for a year, I can say that the confusion over food terminology is definitely real! I once asked for a biscuit in a British cafe and was handed a cookie, much to my surprise. It’s all part of the fun of experiencing different cultures and their unique food traditions.

Growing up in the UK and then moving to the US, I can understand the confusion when it comes to bread rolls being called “biscuits.” In the UK, biscuits are sweet treats, so hearing them referred to as savory bread rolls took some getting used to. It’s all about the cultural differences and regional language variations that can cause confusion, but ultimately, it’s all about enjoying good food regardless of what we call it.
